El Nido Resorts donates used oil to Bantay Kalikasan

El Nido Resorts donated 31,840 liters of used cooking and engine oil to the used oil recycling program of ABS-CBN Foundation-Bantay Kalikasan last February 9-10, 2012. The hauling was done in the presence of ENR’s Engineering and Environment Departments, Bantay Kalikasan, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and Genetron International Marketing (accredited treater and transporter of used industrial oil). ENR’s used oil will be recycled and sold by Genetron, with the proceeds donated to Bantay Kalikasan for use in the La Mesa Dam Watershed Area reforestation project and other initiatives. The final monetary value of the used oil will be known by August 2012.

Oil is necessary to keep engines, generators, and other machinery running smoothly but improper oil disposal pollutes the environment and endangers plants, animals, and people alike. By partnering with Bantay Kalikasan, El Nido Resorts is able to prevent oil pollution, support environmental conservation projects, and reduce costs related to oil disposal. Recycling used oil involves removing water, insolubles, dirt, heavy metals, nitrogen, chlorine, and oxygenated products from the oil drained from machinery. The resulting “rerefined oil” can be made into lubricants and fuel oils that are equivalent to virgin oil.

Fast facts:

  • Recycling just 2 gallons (7.57 liters) of used oil can generate enough electricity to run the average household for almost 24 hours (American Petroleum Institute)
  • It takes 42 gallons (159 liters) of crude oil – but only 1 gallon (3.78 liters) of used oil – to produce 2.5 quarts (2.37 liters) of high-quality lubricating oil
