El Nido Resorts is a Finalist for the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) 2013 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards under the Community Benefit Award category. The Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are one of the highest recognitions given for sustainable tourism best practices in the global travel and tourism industry.

El Nido Resorts' organic farm is manned by local personnel and supply the resorts with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Ten Knots’ demo farm show local farmers how to be productive without having to depend on pesticides and fertilizer. We demonstrate, they grow, we buy. Close to 60% of El Nido Resorts’ kitchen ingredients are now sourced locally.

WTTC received award applications for four categories from 46 countries. The Community Benefit Award, which ENR was recognized for, is given to companies and organizations that “directly benefit local people, support community development, and enhance cultural heritage”. ENR was also a Finalist in 2007 for the same category (formerly called “Investor in People”) in 2007. The other categories are “Destination Stewardship”, “Global Tourism Business”, and “Conservation Award”.

From the WTTC announcement:
“Finalists were selected by an international panel of independent judges chaired by Costas Christ, an internationally recognized expert on sustainable tourism. In the first stage of a comprehensive three-step judging process, judges carefully evaluated and selected award entries that best demonstrate the protection of natural and cultural heritage, delivering social and economic benefits to local people, and engaging in environmentally friendly operations, as well as other established sustainable tourism criteria.

Unique among global sustainable tourism awards, the second phase of judging includes an on-site evaluation of each finalist carried out by international sustainable tourism experts who make in-depth first hand assessments of the organizations and businesses in practice.”

Mariglo Laririt, Director for Sustainability of Ten Knots Development Corporation (operator of El Nido Resorts) said, “To be thirty years-old in the business and forecast growth, to continually contribute to the protection of the environment, and to be partners with the local community in an increasing number of ways – we’re probably doing sustainable.”

Laurent Lamasuta, President of TKDC said, “Being a finalist of the 2013 Tourism for Tomorrow, Community Benefit Awards, and the only Filipino tourism body to be nominated among an array of international high-caliber properties from all continents, is a true testament of a solid team dedication towards excellence in responsible tourism. Proud of the achievements, proud of the team. ”

Sharing buoys is always fun!
El Nido Resorts installed 21 mooring buoys in Bacuit Bay in the 1990s and another 11 buoys in 2011. The buoys are used by both ENR and other tour operators based in El Nido town.

Winners will be announced at the WTTC annual Global Summit on April 9-10, 2013 to be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Employees like Chat Jaboli saved their salaries from El Nido Resorts and have since opened their own businesses in El Nido town.
