El Nido Resorts joined the whole world as it celebrated World Oceans Day last June 8. This UN-recognized event was celebrated with our community partners with the participation of students from Maytegued Elementary School in Taytay, Palawan, Kiminawit Elementary School in El Nido, parents, barangay officials, fishing groups, and resort guest and staff.

This year’s theme, Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet, reminds everyone of the significance of the oceans to all living creatures and to mankind. With this, our community partners in El Nido and Taytay, Palawan were informed of the oceans crucial role and were encouraged to take action against plastic pollution and protect coastal waters.

It was an eventful day in the resorts with activities and games lined up for the celebration of World Oceans Day. A total of 305 participants: 75 staff members, 179 students and 64 parents and local fishermen joined the event. The highlight of the activity was the coastal clean-up where a total of 252 kilos of plastic trash and 105 kilos of bottles and cans were collected.

Before the cleanup, everyone was encouraged to take the Better Bag Challenge by converting old T-shirts into reusable eco bags. These bags were then used as temporary bins for the plastic trash that were picked up. These reusable bags can certainly help reduce the use of plastics produced on land where eighty percent of plastic is from.

World Oceans Day 2015 in El Nido Resorts was truly a united effort to stop plastic pollution!
